Triumph on Home Soil: Antonelli’s Historic Breakthrough and PETRONAS Technologies
15 Sep 2026, 10:09
At the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS driver Kimi Antonelli made an incredible comeback, winning the race after starting from 19th position. Having received a penalty for replacing power unit elements, the 20-year-old Italian was forced to fight his way through the entire grid. The decisive attack occurred three laps before the finish when Antonelli left his teammate George Russell behind.
Aggressive driving in heavy traffic became a serious test for the equipment, but the technological partnership with PETRONAS provided the car with flawless reliability. The extreme temperature loads resulting from constantly staying in the slipstream of rivals were mitigated by the innovative PETRONAS Syntium lubricants and PETRONAS Primax racing fuel. The partner's technologies allowed the engine to operate at maximum power throughout the entire distance without the risk of overheating.
Antonelli's success became a true national celebration: he is the first Italian driver in the last 60 years (since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966) to take gold at Monza. By securing his seventh victory of the 2026 season, Kimi extended his lead over Russell in the drivers' standings to 66 points, cementing the dominance of the Mercedes and PETRONAS technical alliance in the championship.
