Mercedes and PETRONAS Triumph in Baku: George Russell's Historic Success

The past racing weekend was marked by a triumphant performance by the Mercedes team and its technical partner PETRONAS at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

The battle began with a phenomenal Saturday session: George Russell confidently won qualifying on the streets of Baku, securing his fifth pole position of the season and the 12th of his career. This result etched the team into history—Mercedes now has four pole positions in the capital of Azerbaijan, with each one achieved behind the wheel of a Silver Arrow by a different driver: Nico Rosberg (2016), Lewis Hamilton (2017), Valtteri Bottas (2019), and now George Russell (2026).

On Sunday, the British driver cemented his supremacy with an unflawed race, securing his first career "Grand Slam." This victory marked Russell's eighth in Formula 1, his third of the current season, and his debut win in Baku.

A huge contribution to this triumph was made by the advanced Mercedes power unit, developed in close tandem with PETRONAS. This victory became the 251st in the history of Formula 1 for the engines from Brixworth, tying them with Ferrari at the top of the historical engine manufacturer rankings.
